Stealth Ironman (Mezco Toys)

This is a variant of the regular release and is pretty true to the art with the one exception being the triangular part near his shoulder in the comic.  This doesn’t bother me at all personally and I am a fan of Mezco’s.  In fact, of the two, this one is the better one in my opinion.  I especially love the contrast of blue shades in the legs, which really accentuates the high quality of this sculpt.  Only the chest lights up, that’s true, but I’m okay.

Ironman (Mezco Toys)

The Sentinel Ironman figures are the best in my opinion followed closely by Figuarts, but Mezco, one of the best contemporary toy manufacturers hasn’t taken a crack at it till now with a vintage Ironman figure that looks terrific.  A few things to consider first, however.  1) This toy is much less expensive and 2) this means less light-up features.  Having said that, it looks very simple but fantastic.  I like that they didn’t try to make a figure as complex as the two aforementioned companies since they pretty much have that market covered anyway, and I also hope that this isn’t their last attempt at an Ironman figure.  Dare I say, I’d love to see what Mezco Toys would do if they tried to make a Hulkbuster figure.  This figure hasn’t been released yet, but I think that its simplistic design means that it’s not for everyone, but if you like this design and you appreciate the quality and articulation that Mezco is known for, I’d hardly hesitate in recommending this figure.

Kingdom Come Batman

This design comes from the Kingdom Come storyline and is what I find to be one of Batman’s most unique armors.  It’s a good story and a nice, retro-future armor.  Definitely one of his 10 best suits from over the years.  As far as the figure, there were two versions of this.  I got the older version which people seem to prefer for some reason.  I didn’t know it at the time, but I’d recommend the new version for the better price.  It’s nice with poor articulation in the legs arms, waist, and pretty much every meaningful way.  That’s good for the sculpt but it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.  It is consistent with the artwork of this particular storyline, but not for everyone, though I like it quite a bit.  Not bad for a Batman completist, great for someone who loves armored figures, but maybe not for the rest unless you find it for a good price, which is still very much possible.

Alex Ross Armored Batman

Designed after the Adam West Batmobile, this armored suit was made to protect Batman from mind control by nano-worms.  It’s a great design and what I find to be a less than great storyline.  That said, the design is pretty awesome but the figure sadly lacks hard in articulation do to that very design and its integrated wings.  I couldn’t honestly recommend this figure if what you desire from your figures involves articulation, but as a sort of figure-sized statue, it’s not bad despite its paint issues.

Cassandra Cain Batgirl (Justice League of America Classified – Classic Series 2, DC Direct)

Cassandra Cain was an awesome Batgirl.  She was Asian in ethnicity and was unable to speak due to her upbringing as an assassin.  Rivaled by few other Batgirls in DC Comics, she would ultimately be replaced by Stephanie Brown as the Batgirl while continuing to appear in subsequent storylines.  This particular figure of the character is the definitive one to me due to the rather neutral cape and lack of articulation lines in the abdomen area.  It’s clean, it scales well, doesn’t share its sculpt with other figures as far as I’m aware, and it just all around does justice to what I always felt was a totally awesome character.

Dawn of Justice Armored Batman (Mezco)

This was Mezco’s 2016 convention exclusive and is a great figure based off a character from a less than great movie.  It features light-up eyes, which don’t drain batteries too fast, a kryptonite spear (careful or you’ll break the tip), interchangeable hands, and a grenade canister gun.  The fabrics used throughout, the light use of die-cast, and the light-up features all made this one I couldn’t pass up.  My spear tip broke, so please be careful with your if you get one.  Despite that minor quibble, even the spear is made of die cast and the grenade gun even features a loading feature.  It’s another clear win for Mezco and one you’ll be glad to have picked up should you decide to do so.

Azrael Batman (armored, DC Universe)

The blue version of ‘Azbat’ is the most seen in the comics as I remember it and, as such, fetches a higher price.  The red armored version was only available as part of a 2-pack unless you obtained it from the secondary market.  As I recall, that particular version may have only been seen in the comics after his armored suit caught fire for all of about one frame.  It’s a great figure with just a few flaws that commemorates a great storyline in ‘Knightfall’.

Azrael Batman (DC Direct)

This figure comes from the Nightfall storyline during which Azrael took up the mantle as Batman.  He did so after Bane broke Batman’s back and dished out severe punishment to any criminals daring to cross his path.  He even nearly beat Bane to death.  It’s not the only Azrael Batman figure as there are two other versions which feature his more armored appearance along with each color scheme (blue and red).  For my money, this is the best of the three figures, however.  The figure is about 15 years old at this point but still looks to be up to today’s standards in sculpt while lacking in articulation, a trade-off I’ll gladly take.

Sovereign Knight (PX Exclusive)

If someone said that Mezco makes way too many Batman variants, I’d agree with them totally.  I think that it’s far too much to ask your fans to buy so many minor variations.  Some versions are particularly expensive if you aren’t at the right place at the right time, and that’s something I really dislike for their fans.  For that reason, I’m choosing to post the versions I think will be definitive.  The initial Sovereign Knight figure wasn’t that for me as I simply saw it to be far too similar to the Dawn of Justice Affleck Batman, a great figure in its own right.  When this version was announced, I knew that this was the one to get, especially for fans of the blue and white color scheme that Batman has dawned over the years.
